Oil, gas, and coal are currently the most commonly used energy sources and together constitute the largest traded energy commodities globally. These raw materials are almost always processed into final products rather than being used in their natural state. Oil and gas are integral to modern life, with applications ranging from energy production to shelter, clothing, food, and medicine. Our society is heavily reliant on these energy sources, and their reduction would lead to significant disruption. The production and distribution of oil and gas are concentrated in certain regions, and their prices tend to fluctuate unpredictably.
Since the early 1970s, oil prices have been volatile, with supply and demand fluctuations linked to supply disruptions, often due to regional conflicts or actions by oil-producing governments. Other factors contributing to oil price variations include regional and geopolitical influences. OPEC and more recently OPEC+ have sought to stabilize oil prices by adjusting production levels.
