Overview

Course Description

Protective coatings are one of the most effective methods of corrosion control in industrial facilities, oil and gas operations, infrastructure projects, and manufacturing environments. This course provides participants with practical and theoretical expertise in industrial protective coatings, surface preparation, coating failure analysis, inspection methodologies, and asset integrity management.

Aligned with internationally recognised standards from AMPP (the merged NACE/SSPC body), ISO and ASTM, the course develops the ability to identify coating defects, verify surface preparation, and document inspection results effectively. These capabilities contribute directly to asset integrity, cost efficiency, and operational reliability by reducing rework and preventing premature coating failure across high-value assets.

Objectives

What you will achieve

By the end of this training course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the fundamentals of corrosion and protective coating systems
  • Recognise coating types, modes of protection, and curing mechanisms
  • Explain the importance and methods of surface preparation (SSPC/NACE standards)
  • Differentiate coating application methods: brush, roller, airless, conventional, and plural component spray
  • Perform non-destructive inspection: environmental conditions, surface profile, film thickness, and holiday detection
  • Use coating inspection instruments: dry film thickness gauges and surface profile tools
  • Identify common coating defects and their root causes
  • Apply coating specifications and inspection documentation to verify compliance
Training methodology

How the course is delivered

The course combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on inspection practice. Participants gain practical experience with dry film thickness gauges, surface profile measurement tools, and environmental monitoring equipment used during protective coating inspections.

Learning is reinforced with real-world coating failure case studies, defect identification exercises, and inspection documentation practice aligned to AMPP/NACE CIP Level 1 competencies.
