Overview

Course Description

Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) is the technology behind modern metro systems worldwide — replacing fixed blocks with continuous radio communication and moving-block operation, enabling headways and automation that conventional signalling cannot achieve. Every major metro programme across South Asia and the Gulf now specifies CBTC.

This course develops a comprehensive understanding of CBTC systems. Participants learn moving-block principles, CBTC architecture and subsystems, train localisation, radio communications, grades of automation from GoA1 to unattended operation, and the migration, testing and commissioning challenges that define CBTC projects.

Objectives

What you will achieve

By the end of this training course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain CBTC and how it differs from conventional signalling
  • Understand moving block and its capacity benefits
  • Describe CBTC system architecture and subsystems
  • Explain train localisation and positioning
  • Understand radio communications in CBTC
  • Describe grades of automation (GoA1 to GoA4)
  • Understand CBTC migration and brownfield deployment
  • Address CBTC testing, commissioning and interoperability
Training methodology

How the course is delivered

The course combines CBTC architecture with practical deployment and migration examples from metro systems. Participants explore architecture, automation grades and migration scenarios using realistic project situations.

The programme addresses both greenfield and brownfield CBTC deployment, reflecting the reality of most metro modernisation programmes.

Who should attend

Designed for

This training course is ideal for:

  • Signalling and rail systems engineers
