Overview

Course Description

Standard KYC breaks down in commodity trading. Ownership runs through multiple jurisdictions and layered vehicles, traders and intermediaries appear and disappear, offshore structures are routine and often legitimate, and the beneficial owner may be genuinely difficult to establish. Banks routinely fail here — and increasingly push the burden onto the producers and traders themselves.

This course develops practical counterparty due diligence capability for commodity businesses. Participants learn risk-based due diligence design, beneficial ownership identification through complex structures, the assessment of traders, intermediaries and offshore vehicles, source of funds and wealth, PEP and adverse media screening, and ongoing monitoring — building diligence that satisfies both internal risk and banking counterparties.

What you will achieve

By the end of this training course, participants will be able to:

  • Design risk-based counterparty due diligence

  • Assess traders, intermediaries and offshore vehicles
  • Understand source of funds and source of wealth
  • Conduct PEP and adverse media screening
  • Apply enhanced due diligence to high-risk counterparties
  • Document and evidence due diligence decisions
  • Maintain ongoing monitoring and review
Training methodology

How the course is delivered

The course combines due diligence methodology with practical ownership-unwinding exercises on realistic layered corporate structures. Participants work through beneficial ownership, screening and escalation scenarios.

The programme reflects the reality that offshore and layered structures are common and often legitimate, requiring judgement rather than blanket rules.
