Course Description
As Central Asian and emerging power systems reform — unbundling utilities, introducing competition, integrating renewables and building capacity markets — the question of how electricity markets are designed becomes decisive. Market design determines what gets built, what gets dispatched, and whether the lights stay on during transition.
This course develops an understanding of electricity market design and power trading. Participants learn power system and market fundamentals, market structures from single buyer to full competition, wholesale market design and pricing, capacity mechanisms, ancillary services and balancing, the integration of renewables and storage into market design, and power trading, hedging and risk management — connecting the engineering of the grid to the economics that run it.
What you will achieve
By the end of this training course, participants will be able to:
- Explain power system and electricity market fundamentals
- Compare market structures from single buyer to competitive markets
- Understand wholesale market design and pricing mechanisms
- Explain merit order, marginal pricing and dispatch
- Understand capacity mechanisms and adequacy
- Explain ancillary services and balancing markets
- Address renewable and storage integration in market design
- Understand power trading, hedging and risk management
How the course is delivered
The course combines market design principles with practical trading and dispatch exercises, using examples from both mature and reforming power markets. Participants work through pricing, capacity and integration scenarios.
The programme connects market design to system operation and investment outcomes, and is relevant to markets undergoing liberalisation and renewable integration.
