Overview

Course Description

On 20 January 2027 the Machinery Directive disappears. Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 replaces it outright, with no transitional period and no grace period — machinery placed on the EU market from that date must conform to the Regulation from day one.

Three changes matter most. Cybersecurity becomes an essential health and safety requirement: machinery must be designed so that connecting a device cannot create a hazardous situation, and control software must resist tampering. Artificial intelligence performing a safety function classifies the machine as high-risk under Annex I, removing the option of self-certification and requiring a Notified Body. And substantial modification — physical or digital, including a software update that changes the safety profile — can make the modifier the manufacturer, with full conformity and liability duties.

This course prepares manufacturers and integrators. Participants learn the Regulation's structure and scope, the reorganised Annex I high-risk categories, essential requirements in Annex III, cybersecurity and AI provisions, conformity assessment routes, technical documentation and digital instructions, and the substantial modification trap.

Objectives

What you will achieve

By the end of this training course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the Regulation's structure, scope and timeline
  • Determine whether products fall under the Regulation
  • Apply Annex I Part A and Part B high-risk categories
  • Apply the essential health and safety requirements of Annex III
  • Address cybersecurity as a safety requirement
  • Handle AI and self-evolving behaviour in safety functions
  • Select conformity assessment routes and manage Notified Body involvement
  • Recognise substantial modification and its consequences
Training methodology

How the course is delivered

The course works through the Regulation with classification, conformity route and documentation exercises on realistic machinery. Participants assess high-risk categorisation, cybersecurity requirements and modification scenarios.

The programme addresses the intersection with the Cyber Resilience Act and IEC 62443, reflecting that connected machinery must satisfy both physical safety and digital resilience obligations.

Who should attend

This training course is ideal for:

  • Machinery manufacturers and OEMs placing products on the EU market
  • Design and functional safety engineers
  • System integrators and those modifying machinery
