Overview

Course Description

Steel accounts for a substantial share of global industrial emissions, and decarbonising it is the largest single industrial challenge of the energy transition. Hydrogen-based direct reduction is the leading route — and it is already reshaping investment decisions across steel, iron ore and hydrogen supply chains, with direct consequences for iron ore producers and energy suppliers alike.

This course explains green steel and the role of hydrogen in heavy industry. Participants learn conventional steelmaking and its emissions, the decarbonisation routes available, hydrogen direct reduced iron (H₂-DRI) and electric arc furnace steelmaking, hydrogen supply and electrolysis requirements, iron ore quality implications, project economics, and the policy and market forces driving green steel — including what it means for ore producers in the region.

Objectives

What you will achieve

By the end of this training course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain steel's emissions profile and the decarbonisation challenge
  • Describe conventional steelmaking routes
  • Compare green steel decarbonisation pathways
  • Understand hydrogen direct reduced iron (H₂-DRI)
  • Explain electric arc furnace steelmaking
  • Understand hydrogen supply and electrolysis requirements
  • Assess iron ore quality implications for DRI
  • Understand green steel economics, policy and markets
Training methodology

How the course is delivered

The course combines steelmaking technology with hydrogen supply and project economics, using current green steel projects as examples. Participants explore pathways, ore requirements and economics through realistic scenarios.

The programme connects the technology to the commercial and policy forces driving it, and addresses the implications for iron ore producers as well as steelmakers.
