Overview

Course Description

Manual handling injuries are unglamorous, entirely predictable and cumulatively enormous — they remain among the largest causes of lost working days in almost every industry, and almost all of them are preventable by assessment and design rather than exhortation to lift correctly.

This intensive one-day programme develops practical manual handling risk assessment capability. Participants learn the anatomy of manual handling injury, the assessment of task, individual, load and environment, practical assessment tools, control measures through design and equipment, and the implementation of manual handling improvement.

Objectives

What you will achieve

By the end of this programme, participants will be able to:

  • Explain manual handling injury mechanisms and their consequences
  • Identify manual handling risk factors
  • Assess task, individual, load and environment
  • Apply practical manual handling assessment tools
  • Select control measures based on design rather than technique alone
  • Specify handling aids and equipment
  • Address repetitive and awkward handling
  • Implement and review manual handling improvements
Training methodology

How the course is delivered

This intensive one-day programme combines assessment methodology with hands-on practical exercises. Participants conduct manual handling assessments on realistic tasks and select proportionate controls.

The programme emphasises assessment and design over technique training, reflecting that manual handling injuries are controlled by changing the task, not by instructing people to lift more carefully.
