Overview

Course Description

Signalling is the safety-critical nervous system of any railway — the system that keeps trains apart, sets safe routes, and enables capacity. As Central Asian and South Asian networks expand and modernise, signalling competence is among the scarcest and most valuable engineering skills in rail.

This course develops a comprehensive foundation in railway signalling. Participants learn the principles of safe train separation, interlocking, train detection, signalling equipment, control systems, and the standards and safety principles that govern signalling design — providing the grounding required to work with, specify, or manage signalling systems on modern railways.

Objectives

What you will achieve

By the end of this training course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the purpose and principles of railway signalling
  • Understand safe train separation and block systems
  • Describe train detection technologies
  • Explain interlocking principles and route setting
  • Understand signalling equipment and infrastructure
  • Describe control and centralised traffic control systems
  • Apply signalling safety principles and fail-safe design
  • Understand signalling standards and the move to digital signalling
Training methodology

How the course is delivered

The course combines signalling principles with practical examples from modern railway systems. Participants work through interlocking logic, detection and route-setting scenarios using realistic railway layouts.

The programme establishes the fundamentals required before advancing to CBTC, ETCS and digital signalling, and is framed around international standards rather than a single national system.

Who should attend

Designed for

This training course is ideal for:

  • Railway engineers and technicians
  • Signalling and telecom engineers
  • Infrastructure and operations managers
  • Project engineers on rail projects
  • Anyone working with railway signalling
