Overview

Course Description

Electrified railways carry traction currents at voltages and magnitudes that make earthing and bonding a life-safety matter — protecting passengers, staff and equipment from touch voltages, stray current corrosion and fault conditions. Errors here are among the most serious hazards in rail electrification.

This course develops a practical understanding of earthing and bonding in electrified railways. Participants learn traction system fundamentals, return current paths, touch and step voltage, earthing and bonding design, stray current control and corrosion, and the standards and testing requirements that govern rail electrification safety.

Objectives

What you will achieve

By the end of this training course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain traction power systems and return current paths
  • Understand touch and step voltage hazards
  • Apply earthing and bonding principles to railways
  • Design earthing and bonding arrangements
  • Understand stray current and its corrosion effects
  • Apply stray current control measures
  • Understand relevant standards and requirements
  • Plan testing, inspection and verification
Training methodology

How the course is delivered

The course combines earthing and bonding theory with practical design and testing examples from electrified railways. Participants work through touch voltage, bonding design and stray current scenarios.

The programme addresses both AC and DC traction systems and the distinct hazards each presents.

Who should attend

Designed for

This training course is ideal for:

  • Railway electrification engineers
  • Electrical and OLE engineers
  • Infrastructure and maintenance staff
  • Safety engineers in rail
  • Anyone working on electrified railways
