Overview

Course Description

Modern railway safety depends on software — interlockings, ATP, CBTC, train control — and EN 50716 is the standard governing how that software must be developed, verified and assured. It replaces and consolidates the previous EN 50128/50657 framework, and compliance is mandatory for safety-critical rail software.

This course develops a working understanding of EN 50716 and safety-critical software development for railways. Participants learn software safety integrity levels, the development lifecycle, verification and validation, tool qualification, and the documentation and assurance evidence required to demonstrate compliance.

Objectives

What you will achieve

By the end of this training course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the role of safety-critical software in railways
  • Understand EN 50716 and its relationship to EN 5012x
  • Apply software safety integrity levels (SIL)
  • Understand the software development lifecycle
  • Apply verification and validation requirements
  • Understand tool qualification
  • Manage software assurance documentation
  • Demonstrate compliance and support the safety case
Training methodology

How the course is delivered

The course combines the EN 50716 framework with practical lifecycle and assurance examples from railway software projects. Participants work through SIL allocation, V&V planning and evidence requirements.

The programme focuses on demonstrating compliance and building the assurance evidence that underpins railway safety cases.
