Overview

Course Description

In safety-critical industries, human performance is a designed-for system property, not a matter of individual diligence. Organisations that manage error well do so by designing tasks, interfaces, procedures and cultures that make error less likely and more recoverable — not by exhorting people to be careful.

This course develops practical capability in human factors and error management. Participants learn how human performance works and fails, task and interface design, procedures and workload, fatigue risk management, safety culture and just culture, and how to build an error management programme that improves performance rather than assigning blame.

Objectives

What you will achieve

By the end of this training course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain human performance and its limits
  • Understand how error arises and can be managed
  • Apply error management principles proactively
  • Address task, interface and workplace design
  • Design effective procedures
  • Manage workload and fatigue risk
  • Understand safety culture and just culture
  • Build an error management programme
Training methodology

How the course is delivered

The course combines human performance science with practical error management application. Participants work through design, procedure and fatigue scenarios drawn from safety-critical operations.

The programme emphasises designing systems for human performance rather than exhorting individuals, and addresses the culture required to surface and learn from error.
