Overview

Course Description

Non-destructive testing decisions are made by people who do not hold the probe. An engineer specifies the method, an inspector reads the report, and an integrity manager decides what the indication means for continued operation — and each of them can be wrong in ways the technician never sees.

This course builds NDT competence for those who specify, oversee and interpret rather than operate. Participants learn the physical basis and capability of each principal method — visual, penetrant, magnetic particle, eddy current, radiographic and ultrasonic — advanced ultrasonic techniques including phased array and TOFD, method selection against defect type and geometry, probability of detection and its limits, acceptance criteria and standards, interpretation of reports and indications, and the qualification framework under ISO 9712.

Note: this course develops specification, oversight and interpretation competence. Certification of NDT personnel to operate methods is granted by certification bodies under ISO 9712 and requires documented practical experience and examination.

Objectives

What you will achieve

By the end of this training course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the physical basis and capability of each principal NDT method
  • Compare visual, penetrant, magnetic particle and eddy current testing
  • Compare radiographic and ultrasonic testing
  • Understand advanced ultrasonics: phased array and TOFD
  • Select methods against defect type, material and geometry
  • Apply probability of detection and understand its limits
  • Apply acceptance criteria and relevant standards
  • Interpret NDT reports and indications for integrity decisions
Training methodology

How the course is delivered

The course combines NDT physics with method selection and interpretation exercises using realistic defect scenarios, reports and indications. Participants specify inspection scopes and interpret results for integrity decisions.

The programme is designed for those who specify and interpret rather than operate, and addresses the questions that determine inspection value: which method, what can it actually find, and what does the indication mean.

Who should attend

Designed for

This training course is ideal for:

  • Engineers specifying inspection scopes
  • Inspection and integrity engineers
  • Quality and QA/QC professionals
  • Maintenance and reliability engineers
  • Anyone interpreting NDT results or overseeing NDT contractors
